A Great Day, A Great Game, A Great Result!

A result for all Spurs fans to savour and remember for ever. A result that we all look forward to seeing repeated some day, in the not too distant future. (I hope).

Spurs' injury problems had persisted throughout the season. To strengthen the squad Alan Brazil was signed from Ipswich for £450,000. He made his debut against Watford and Spurs won 1-0, their first away win since September. However, Steve Perryman was sent off and the second game of his two match suspension was this game against Arsenal. Going into this Easter Monday game, Spurs were a point ahead of Arsenal but had lost at bottom club, Brighton, the previous Saturday. Spurs were also without the injured Hoddle, Ardiles and Villa and went into the game with 4 strikers, Falco (Pic: above), Archibald, Gibson and Brazil.

The 92nd League game between the clubs was memorable for Spurs, described in 'The Times' as 'not so much a famous victory for Tottenham Hotspur but an embarrassing humilation for Arsenal.'

Spurs were three ahead ahead within 18 minutes. Chris Hughton scored the first and third goals but the second goal after 13 minutes was a stunning volley from Mark Falco. A goal described by Burkinshaw as 'the best goal I've seen in a long time.' Mark Falco also scored a second and Alan Brazil spurned many opportunities to score his first goal for Spurs but eventually scored after an hour.

Spurs finished the season in 4th place, 11 points ahead of Arsenal in 10th position.

FA Cup Semi-Final at Wembley

In the first 100 years of the FA Cup there had been only two Cup meetings between the North London rivals 1949 and 1982. Now, there had been two meetings in three seasons as the clubs again went to Wembley for the semi-final. Spurs lost to a headed goal from a corner but should have had a penalty when Anderton was scythed to the ground in the penalty area. The referee gave a corner but the defender clearly didn't touch the ball. Dixon was sent off for tripping Edinburgh, three minutes from the end.

Spurs 6 Ipswich Town 3

Spurs again demonstrated they had discovered how to play against Alf Ramsey's Ipswich. In 1961 - 62 season, Ipswich had won both League games and went on to be League Champions. Spurs had reversed these results in the Charity Shield, winning 5-1, and winning both League games (5-0 at home, 4-2 away).

This season as Ipswich slumped to relegation, Spurs won 3-2 at Ipswich and this home game saw Cliff Jones score a hat-trick, John White scored twice in the first half as Spurs lead 4-1 by the break. Jimmy Robertson scored his first goal for the club in only his second appearance, having signed from St. Mirren. John White was back to near his best form in a game that saw the Ipswich centre forward, Gerry Baker, score a hat-trick.
